Behaviour Problems

Are you overwhelmed by some aspects of your dog's behaviour?

Dogs can develop behaviours that cause problems for their owners.

Modern life in a city like Edinburgh can be stressful for dogs, and they may not know how to cope.

Dogs may be exhibiting behaviours that are normal for dogs but not appropriate for life with their humans in the city.

Often the cause is lack of consistent training which leads the dog to making poor choices.

A few private sessions can teach you how to bring out the best in your dog!

I have over 15 years experience working with dogs and cats. Presently I work as a trainer and behaviourist with Furry Friends and Deb’s Dog Training.

I completed an MSc with Distinction in Animal Welfare at the University of Edinburgh where I specialized in the welfare and behaviour of dogs and cats.

I am a provisional member of the Association of Pet Behaviour Counsellors (APBC)* and I am working to gain the practical experience necessary for full membership.

I have completed the Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) Advanced Course.

I have assisted in classes with Dogs & the City in edinburgh. and have worked with Edinburgh Dog Behaviour.

I have given a TED style talk in Recife, Brazil on Assessing the Welfare of Street Dogs and Cats, and presented my dissertation research on assessing the welfare of shelter animals at the World Veterinary Congress (WVC) in Incheon, Korea.

Previously I worked in animal shelters, as a pet sitter, and as a veterinary assistant.

*Provisional members have demonstrated that they have the appropriate level of Knowledge and Understanding for the professional role of Clinical Animal Behaviourist (CAB). They are now gaining the practical experience necessary to be assessed as a CAB and therefore become a full member of the APBC. The APBC supports its provisional members undertaking behaviour consultations.

Satisfied Customers:

from Kate for Harris:

My partner and I enlisted Debs to help us know we were training our new puppy in the right way. She responded to us quickly and suggested we have a phone call with her first before booking any training sessions, which we really loved. This meant we got a chance to get to know Debs prior to training starting, and she got to know us, and what we needed from her, a little better too.

When she arrived at our home for our 121 puppy sessions, Harris connected with her immediately and, as the lessons went on, it was clear how much he enjoyed her company and the training sessions. We learnt some excellent tips & tricks from Debs, and we have a lovely, well behaved dog because of this. I would highly recommend Debs as a dog trainer!"

On our last session together, we spoke a lot about Harris pulling! He still does pull, but I think it's mainly just excitement. We discovered though, that using a harness on him which attaches a lead from both a front and back clip, really REALLY helps! I'm not sure what it is, but he's much easier to control and definitely pulls less whilst on it (unless VERY excited for the park!)

From Sharon for Pepper:

I cannot thank Debs enough for all the help and advise she gave in getting my now 1 year old miniature schnauzer Pepper to where she is a happy funny cheeky obedient wee dog. Debs reward based techniques were easy and fun to apply and with consistency my pup picked up on them quite readily. I never wanted a performing dog just a happy well adjusted one and that’s what I have 🐶 I highly recommend Debs!

From Maggie and her family:

Thank you so much for a great class. All 3 of us really enjoyed it. We are still practicing and have lots of reading material to follow up on.Maggies doing great!

From Susan and Monty:

A huge thank you from Monty and I for masterminding the excellent puppy training course.  We still have much to work on, but feel that the foundations are now in place for Monty to take his place in polite society!

From Maggie and Donut:

Thanks to you for all the helpful and supportive training that you gave us. It really is great to have people that know what they are talking about! I’ve heard some horror stories about puppy classes but always felt very safe and supported by you both, which of course goes for Donut too.
